Sharing contacts with people means when you edit a contact everyone who is sharing that contact receives the update on their next sync. This will save you time because you will receive the updates others make. Also, receiving updates from others helps to ensure you always have the most accurate and up to date information possible.

[edit] Sharing Contacts Using Thunderbird

  1. Install the excellent ScheduleWorld Thunderbird add-on. Use the email installer found on this page: Thunderbird_Configuration. This enables the 'Share' option when you right-click an address book.
  2. Right-click an address book to share it. The screen shot on the left shows someone in the process of sharing their work address book.
  3. Select the users you want to share the address book with. The right screen shot shows someone selecting the user 'first1 last1' to share the address book.
  4. Click 'Save' to tell ScheduleWorld to set up sharing on the server and to email the user(s) you are sharing with.
  5. The next time the person you're shared your address book with syncs with Thunderbird they will have a non-conflicting address book created for them and your shared contacts will be there.

[edit] Sharing Contacts Using The Web 2.0 Contacts Application

In a nutshell, all you have to do is click the 'Sharing' button (visible only when some of your contacts are in a specific category). Some screen shots will be added here shortly.

[edit] Deleted Shared Contacts Are Not Synchronized

In order to not surprise folks with a deleted address book delete actions on shared contacts do not propagate to others.

  • If you delete a contact that you previously shared:
  1. it will be deleted in your address book.
  2. no shared versions of this contact will be deleted.
  3. sharing of the contact is disabled, so you will not receive any changes that others made on your deleted contact - even if you do a slow sync.
